Virtual Coding+ Camp @ MFL Online
Virtual Coding+ Camp @ MFL
For students entering grades 6-8. Limited to 6 students per meeting.
Provide an email address that you check, as you will receive the Google Meets link directly from the Coding(+) team to join the meeting!
Our dedicated crew of Penncrest students will be hosting Coding(+) Camp again this summer! This year's campers will be coding in Python, a text-based programming language that is the most widely taught at the university level. It is also one of the most popular programming languages in industry, used by such organizations as Google, Amazon and Facebook.
Students will learn how to write and debug Python programs using engaging graphics and animations. The platform that will be used was developed by Carnegie Mellon's CS (Computer Science) Academy and is intended for use in after-school programs, clubs and coding camps. Students will begin drawing basic shapes using the CMU Graphics package and will quickly evolve into more exciting areas utilizing shading, motion, and user-input to develop animations and simple games.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and requirement for social distancing, this summer's camp will be held on-line using Google Meets. The Carnegie Mellon CS Academy program runs in any browser, so any notebook computer (Windows, Mac or Chromebook) will work. It is recommended that a computer with a keyboard (rather than a tablet) be used to make typing code easier.
Previous coding experience in any language is beneficial but not required.
Students will be emailed a link for the Google Meet they choose to join, and each meeting will last from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. For a one-day hour long session students will work with team members to set up a CS1 Carnegie Mellon Coding account for free! The curriculum is best suited for students entering 6th - 8th grade. Students will be shown and walked through multiple lessons in which they will learn the basics of pre-AP Computer Science and can work through the lessons, create their own games, or just practice skills. No previous computer science knowledge necessary! After walking through the basics, students will be able to work on their own and join back into the Google meet lobby to ask any questions and show off their work! After the session is over students will still have access to the free coding account and will be able to continue with the curriculum on their own. Each lesson has an answer key so students will be able to check their own work in the future!
