A Visit with Ned Hector: Black Revolutionary War Hero

A Visit with Ned Hector: Black Revolutionary War Hero

Portrayed by Noah Lewis, actor/historian

Edward “Ned” Hector (1743-1834) was a free black man and noted in American history for his courage during the retreat from the Battle of Brandywine. Ned, who was in Col. Proctor’s 3rd PA Artillery, was a teamster who drove gunpowder in his wagon for the cannons and refused to give up his horses, wagon, and the armaments that he carried. The patriot also fought at the Battle of Germantown. A painting at Philadelphia’s historic house and museum, Cliveden, of four cannons bombarding the Chew House is the 3rd Artillery and is from Ned’s point of view. In 1850, just 16 years after his death, a street was named for him in Conshohocken and a historical plaque marks the location of his log cabin. The African American hero is quoted as saying, “They shall not have my team! I will save my horses or perish myself.”
