Great American Illustrators--Maxfield Parrish

Great American Illustrators--Maxfield Parrish Online

Norman Rockwell and Maxfield Parrish, nearly contemporaries in the art world at the turn of the 20th Century, were two giants of the Golden Age of Illustration. They, along with NC Wyeth, The Red Rose Girls, Howard Pyle and Frank Leyendecker are some of the best known American Illustrators in American History.  Rockwell and Parrish prints constitute some of the most popular art sold in the 20th Century. Their art covered magazines such as Life, Colliers, Saturday Evening Post, Hearst’s, McClure’s and popular magazines for decades, inspiring generations of American and European artists. The genius of these giants are the core of a tradition that merged the demands of mass media with photographic technology and compelling Art. This program explores their lives, loves, art and legacies.

Steve Pollack is a performer, director, lecturer and actor who has appeared in venues ranging from Grand Opera to Blues and Pop; an actor and director of stage plays; and as a lecturer and teacher in Universities, schools, community organizations, private associations and retirement homes.  He has performed in many local and regional theaters in opera, concert, and musical theater and was one of the original members of Peter Nero’s Voices of the Pops in Philadelphia. His lectures and lecture series cover subjects of culture, history, music, and social change with specific focus on the critical, ironic or trivial connections between historical events. He was educated at Franklin & Marshall College and Fairleigh Dickinson Univ, receiving a fellowship from the Mennen Foundation for Music.

Session 1 (September 24 - Click Here) will focus on Norman Rockwell with an introduction to Maxfield Parrish, and Session 2 (This session - Register below) will be concerned with the art of Parrish, giving time to a comparison of techniques and characters used by both artists.  Attendance at both sessions is recommended but not required.
