Lit Legend: Oscar Wilde

Lit Legend: Oscar Wilde Online

Oscar Wilde exuded confidence in his life and work. In plays like The Importance of Being Earnest and books like The Picture of Dorian Gray, he uses satire and witticisms to show a deft understanding of late Victorian London. As a gay man who was raised in North Ireland, though, he often did not feel like he belonged in that society. We’ll discuss the theme of belonging across some of Wilde’s major works. We will also talk about how Wilde’s vision for a more inclusive society might remain relevant today.

Presented online via Zoom by Dr. Nina Benhardus, Assistant Professor of English at Delaware County Community College.
