Astronomy in the South
In summer 2025, the Astronomy in Chile Educator Ambassador Program selected just ten individuals worldwide to experience the incredible astronomy of the Chilean Andes. Our presenter, Deborah Skapik, was fortunate to be one of them.
This immersive program combined two worlds: ancient and modern. Around a campfire with indigenous Chileans, I learned sky stories such as the “dark llama” in the Milky Way. In contrast, at the Vera Rubin Telescope, home to the world’s largest digital camera.
Along her experience, Deborah encountered unexpected surprises, like flamingos thriving in the high Atacama Desert, whose presence tells us much about the ecosystem and its connection to astronomy.
This presentation will also include: Stunning astrophotography from Chile’s dark skies, insights into cutting-edge facilities like ALMA and the Vera Rubin Observatory, the concept of cosmovision, and how telescopes of all ages and nations are being linked together for collaborative science.
This program is designed for adults, but middle school age and up are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and there will be a check-in at the door.
