Reading Ancient Egyptian Art - An Ancient Egypt Presentation by Dr. Stephen Phillips
The ancient Egyptians did not have a word for “art,” per se. For them, art was not art for art’s sake - artistic elements in architecture, jewelry, relief, and sculpture, were intended to be functional, to fulfill a role or a task.
The ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic language is regularly found incorporated into these elements, which means the piece often can be “read.” This lifelong learning class decodes the hidden writing in Egyptian artifacts and what this meant to those who created and viewed it.
