Summer Reading Kick-off: Brazilian Adventure for Kids
Winsor Room - No registration - All ages
Presented by the Minas Brazilian Music Ensemble, a fun, uplifting blend of Brazilian music and culture.
Minas introduces students to the country of Brazil through its music, Samba and Bossa Nova. After performing examples of Brazilian music and presenting historic, geographical and educational references, they introduce Brazil’s famous festival Carnaval, demonstrating authentic Brazilian percussion instruments - surdo, tamborim, repinique, agogô, reco-reco, ganzá, pandeiro, and cuíca. Participation is enhanced by engaging students to sing in Portuguese (the language of Brazil), scat, and play authentic Brazilian percussion (instruments supplied). Students learn while being engaged and having fun!
Based in Philadelphia for a great part of their career, internationally acclaimed Minas has been on the forefront of world music and Brazilian Jazz in the Northeast for the past 40 years. Led by the couple Orlando Haddad and Patricia King, Minas has recorded and released 8 CDs of original music and classic rhythms of Brazil. Their latest, Beatles in Bossa, was indicated for 5 Grammy Awards. Minas mixes north and south seamlessly-- Patricia on piano and vocal, and Orlando on nylon-string guitar and vocal, complement each other and create a mood that only a lifetime of performing together can attain. Their music is inspiring and warm, their vocals sensual, their instruments percussive, and their melodic lines jazzy.
