Bringing NASA Technology Down to Earth
There’s probably more NASA technology in our lives than we can ever imagine.
Do you have a dust buster at home? Cordless power tools? Ever wonder about the grooved pavement on entrance and exit ramps? Have you ever had Lasik eye surgery?
All of these inventions and many more had their beginnings in some technology developed for a NASA aerospace mission.
So, how do the technologies get from the NASA missions into our everyday lives?

Sheri Beam graduated from Mansfield University in Pennsylvania with a degree in Spanish. She also studied Spanish in Mexico and Spain. After graduating, she taught Spanish in Pennsylvania and New York before returning to school at West Chester University for a Master’s degree in media. She then taught at North Dakota State University (NDSU) and at Hampton University in Virginia. While at NDSU, Beam received a grant to write, direct, and produce a documentary that aired on PBS in the Midwest. During her years at Hampton, she received four annual NASA-American Society for Engineering Fellowships to work as a writer/producer at NASA Langley Research Center, focused on helping researchers communicate their work. She worked as a full-time NASA employee for 25 years.
