Bonfire of the Ballet Girls: Beauty, Peril, and Power on the 19th Century Stage
Jennifer Green returns with a fascinating account of a 19th century local disaster. In the 19th century, the epitome of grace was the ballerina's gauzy costume; the height of modernity on stage was gas illumination. When fuel met fire, disaster unfurled for nine dancers in Philadelphia.
