Civil Rights & Black Power Movement: The Lasting Influence on American Politics

Understanding the Past, Shaping the Future: The Civil Rights and Black Power Movements

Join us for an enlightening evening with Dr. Kelly Harris, Sr. Staff Director of UPenn's Center for Africana Studies, as we explore the profound impact of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements on American society and politics. These pivotal movements have not only reshaped the United States but also ignited ongoing discussions, influencing the political landscape to this day.

Dr. Kelly Harris, with a background in political science and African American studies, will guide us through the enduring influence of these movements. Holding a Ph.D. in Political Science from Clark Atlanta University, and former positions as Associate Professor of African American Studies at Chicago State University and Director of Africana Studies at Seton Hall University, Dr. Harris brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the discussion.

His scholarly interests span African politics, globalization, neoliberal development, and the works of 19th-century Black social scientists. As a Philly native and an active researcher, Dr. Harris also has a unique perspective on the local and global impacts of these historical movements.

Don’t miss this compelling analysis of how civil rights and activism continue to shape our lives and futures. Whether you are a student of history, a participant in politics, or a community member seeking deeper understanding, this session promises valuable insights into the forces that mold our society.
