The History of Steel Drums

The History of Steel Drums

This family-friendly presentation will include live steel drum music and attendees will have the opportunity to play a steel drum. All ages welcome!

About the Presenter:

David Gettes is a scientist, teacher, and steel drum musician, builder, and tuner. In the 1980's he became one of the first individuals to scientifically study the building and tuning of steel drums under the direction of the "father of the steel drum", 90 years old, Ellie Mannette of Trinidad. David became Ellie's apprentice and studied with him 7 years learning the guarded secrets of how to build, tune and perform on all the different steel drums that comprise a Steel Drum Orchestra. David is now a leading figure in the steel drum art form with his band Trinidad North performing and lecturing throughout the United States on the musical, social and technical evolution of this art form.
